Hammerbass is one of France’s leading dub labels and one which has fine sense of quality control. Sometimes the ‘new dub’ movement can seem a little too self-absorbed, but Kanka, who plays all the instruments on this, his second CD, has a strong awareness of the music’s Jamaican roots. He plays in a militant ‘steppers’ style, with his tracks often based around the one-drop – though his approach is most definitely contemporary, as he sometimes opts for a harsh metallic sound recalling the UK fashion for ‘jungle’ (very up tempo drum ‘n’ bass) of a few years back. However, he keeps in touch with the roots by employing Brixton’s excellent Brother Culture for three vocal tracks. In short, if you like modern dub, you’ll like this. - Norman Darwen
