Now this is very, very nice. Baby G (Max Elizabeth) was born in Martinique and as a teenager worked on the island’s reggae sound systems, recording a few tracks before he tried his luck in Jamaica in 1995. He recorded in Jamdown at the Mixing Lab, and then relocated to France, where he again hooked up with numerous sound systems, including the Hammerbass/ Dub Action crew. This album is one result of that collaboration.
An extremely fine CD it is too. Baby G has a wonderful voice, sweet and spiritually charged, though occasionally he can burn like Sizzla, and his texts (mostly in French) are always positive. Roots reggae is another influence, to be heard on the likes of ‘Rasta’ and ‘Zion’ (which features Ariwa recording artist Ghetto Priest as special guest), and dancehall is present courtesy of ‘Ashanti’ featuring New York’s Jamalski and ‘Bo Kail’ with the big French ragga star Yannis Odua. There are a couple of lover’s oriented numbers and some exceptionally fine acoustic based items.
It is worth making the effort to track this set down – something familiar, but also a little different. Do try to hear it. And let’s hear more. - Norman Darwen
